Tweed Champ® 5F1 Style Guitar Tube Amp Kit

Mojotone’s Tweed Champ Style Amp Kit is based on the beloved 5 watt amp from the 1950s. These amps were perfect for recording and were featured on a wide array of recordings from Joe Walsh’s “Rocky Mountain Way” all the way to Derek & the Dominos’ “Layla.” Modeled after the historic Class-A 6V6 platform, this amp delivers warm tones that are harmonically rich and have a beautiful low volume crunch.

When purchasing a kit from Mojotone, you will receive the following documentation.

1. Schematic

2. Wiring Diagram / Layout

If you purchase a kit from Mojotone and do not receive these documents, you can obtain copies by emailing tech@mojotone.com or calling 800-927-6656. The Mojotone staff is available Monday through Friday from 8:30 a.m. to 5:00 p.m. EST unless otherwise closed.

Mojotone kits include the best quality parts that are available at the time of purchase. If a substitution is required, our team will use parts that are of equal quality to ensure the integrity of the kit build remains the same.

Building a fully functional amplifier kit is not an easy task. Before building a kit, one should have the ability to properly solder as well as read and understand a schematic and wiring diagram. While we do our very best to ensure all documentation is current, the included documentation is meant to serve as an overall guide to building the amplifier. Simply following the schematic and wiring diagram does not guarantee you will have a fully functional amplifier. In fact, post build troubleshooting is a common issue across all builds.

Our staff is available to assist with basic troubleshooting needs. There are plenty of online videos available that are helpful with most post build issues. Technical staff is available via email by sending a message to tech@mojotone.com. You may also call our sales team to discuss build problems, dial 800-927-6656 and press 1 for sales.

Building a tube amplifier takes time, dedication, resources and most importantly... Skills! The experience of building an amp can come with some frustration, the reward of completing the build is definitely well worth your time. Please review the wiring diagram, schematic and manual (if applicable) prior to making your purchase. Mojotone will not accept any returns on amplifier kits and/or parts that have been assembled, soldered or modified.

Reviews

Just great!

"Great kit! Had no experience in soldering and amp building before. The amp works fine and sounds great from the first time I've switched it on. There is a little bit of hum, but that's by design (both transformers close together, due to the small dimensions of the amp) and it's absolutely neglectable. It's my new favorite amp, I love it! Just guitar, short cable and amp -- sounds great! Anything else would pollute the raw, outstanding vintage sound ;-)"

Quality parts and clear detailed instructions!

"My son is a big fan of Julian Lage, who only uses his vintage Champ. It also helped that this is one of the most recorded amps out there. This is our second Mojotone kit and it was a no brainer to select it since our great experience with our Blackface before. Quality parts and clear detailed instructions!"

Top Notch Everything

"Top quality components along with excellent documentation and stellar support. The build quality of the cabinet was exceptional. I did not notice it at first but even the Tweed pattern lined up with the panels on the back of the cabinet. This is a step above anything else I've seen. If this much effort goes into the little things you know the important things are taken care of too."

studio quality sound

"I purchased this kit without the cabinet or speaker. The amp is a pretty straight forward build and merits the 1 out of 5 build difficulty rating. The 4 hour build time is pretty close for someone with a little experience but might be a bit shy for a first timer. I built my own cabinet and paired the Champ with a 20 watt 10" speaker. The amp puts out studio quality sound and belies its 5 watt rating. As mentioned in another review, it mics up really well. It also takes pedals really well. Plus, the folks at Mojotone are always great at helping on any technical questions."

Very good kit, great service, instructions could be a touch better

"Mojotone had great communication. The kit itself was packaged well and the parts were quality. This was my first kit and it fired up on the initial switch on, though my voltages were a touch lower than the layout reads. It amplifies and I am thrilled with this kit for that reason. I did take one star away because I think a few minor adjustments could make this kit perfect. I needed more 18-gauge green cloth wire. I didn't have any for the filaments from the 6v6 to the 12ax7. Ended up using transformer wire cutoffs, hope that isn't a problem! Speaking of filament wires, I wish I had made the green twisted wire go between the boards prior to installing the boards. Was a pain to get that in after. A few other minor issues but by and large, great kit! Thanks, Mojotone!!!"

Everyone should own a 5F1 once in their life.

"I built this amp about 12 years ago and figured it was time for a review. The cabinet was built to accommodate a 15” speaker. My first speaker was a Weber 15A100. The 15” had a big upper mid-range edge and a beam blocker did not help. Mojotone makes a great 15” to 12” speaker adapter. That adapter and a WGS G12Q was a big step in the right direction. It had gorgeous mids, but it was a little too dark on top with the 5F1 circuit. Then I tried a Weber 12A125S. Although less efficient, the top opened up like crazy and there was touch sensitivity that was better than any amp I've owned. Dimed with an Esquire, Page's early sound comes right into the studio. Played clean with a Heritage H150 or a Strat, it is everything a great clean sound should be. Like a 5E3, everyone should own a 5F1 at least once in their life."

From fun project to awesome amp.

"This is long term review, I've been enjoying this amp for about a year now. First off Mojotone's service was awesome on this. I originally planned to build this into a custom cab but backed out on the idea. The Mojotone cabinet was just coming back into stock. The sales person made sure it was available and got shipped right before the holidays and I did my build over holiday break. The documentation is great but watching YouTube videos of other builds and techniques used in assembly are helpful. Mostly for confidence and making the assembly clean. I thought it would be a fun project but I had no idea how good the amp would be. The kit parts result in a perfect low wattage amp. Thanks again!"

Boutique quality at an extremely affordable price

"I built this kit about four years ago. This thing is a monster. Terrific clean tones at lower volumes and unparallelled overdriven tones just before max. My go to amp for recording. Trust me, tinkerers. Leave the stock 8" speaker in there! I tried others, and put it the American Vintage back in. Parts are top notch. I went stock, except I switched the orange drops for blue sozos, and used NOS tubes. Great kit. Boutique quality at an extremely affordable price!"

Thanks dudes

"This is the 2nd amp I built from a Mojotone kit, the 1st being a 5E3 Deluxe. Both were so much fun to put together. Their instructions are spot on, and the quality of the components are top notch. When you're done, you have an amp that's worth twice the cost of the kit, had you purchased it from Fender. I actually found the Deluxe build easier..it had more parts, but with my large hands & long fingers, the smaller chassis on the Champ made it a bit more difficult for me to work inside. These guys are the best...if you have any issues, just email or call them & they'll fix it. Thanks dudes, Cheers to you."

Great little kit, looking forward to the next one

"Because I'm new to this whole amp kit thing I took my time but it still only took me about 6 or 7 hours and sounds great. thanks to the staff at Mojotone who answered questions very quickly. Great little kit, looking forward to the next one."
