Mojotone GA-5 Style Guitar Tube Amp Kit

Originally produced from 1954-1956 the GA-5 was often called Gibson’s answer to Fender’s 5C1- Wide Panel Tweed Champ. Both the Champ and the GA-5 used a 6SJ7, 6V6 and 5Y3 tube compliment and shared a very similar schematic and part assortment. Often over looked and undervalued, the GA-5 is a fantastic recording amp that loves to be pushed and also makes a great living room amp that puts out a warm clean tone at lower volumes.

Mojotone brings the GA-5 circuit back to life with the Mojotone GA-5 Style Kit. Featuring a classic TV Front cabinet, vintage inspired circuit now using a 6V6, 12AX7 and 5Y3 tube compliment – this unsung classic is the perfect amp kit to get you started on your amp building journey.

When purchasing a kit from Mojotone, you will receive the following documentation.

1. Schematic

2. Wiring Diagram / Layout

Our beginner level kits such as the tweed champ and tweed deluxe include a manual. If you purchase a kit from Mojotone and do not receive these documents, you can obtain copies by emailing tech@mojotone.com or calling 800-927-6656. The Mojotone staff is available Monday through Friday from 8:30 a.m. to 5:00 p.m. EST unless otherwise closed.

Mojotone kits include the best quality parts that are available at the time of purchase. If a substitution is required, our team will use parts that are of equal quality to ensure the integrity of the kit build remains the same.

Building a fully functional amplifier kit is not an easy task. Before building a kit, one should have the ability to properly solder as well as read and understand a schematic and wiring diagram. While we do our very best to ensure all documentation is current, the included documentation is meant to serve as an overall guide to building the amplifier. Simply following the schematic and wiring diagram does not guarantee you will have a fully functional amplifier. In fact, post build troubleshooting is a common issue across all builds.

Our staff is available to assist with basic troubleshooting needs. There are plenty of online videos available that are helpful with most post build issues. Technical staff is available via email by sending a message to tech@mojotone.com. You may also call our sales team to discuss build problems, dial 800-927-6656 and press 1 for sales.

Building a tube amplifier takes time, dedication, resources and most importantly... Skills! The experience of building an amp can come with some frustration, the reward of completing the build is definitely well worth your time. Please review the wiring diagram, schematic and manual (if applicable) prior to making your purchase. Mojotone will not accept any returns on amplifier kits and/or parts that have been assembled, soldered or modified.

Great amp! Fun build.

"I had been looking for a simpler amp build after a fender tweed I built and this was perfect. Point to point is great to help you understand the schematics. I would highly recommend getting the amp chassis stand as well because it really helps you get in on some of the odd angles the chassis has. Goes from quiet and jangly to aggressive with the intensity of your picking. Plenty loud for 5 watts. Mojotone support was awesome as well."

Awesome Amp

"I love this amp. I didn't know 5 watts could sound so good. I bought this kit through reverb and forgot my password so when the 12ax7 was bad out of the box I wasn't able to get a replacement but I had one out of a hammond organ. I got a lesson in troubleshooting and checking my work but that bad tube was very valuable in teaching opportunity. Very sweet sounding amp."

Overall a good amp that was easy to build.

"Built this in November. The great instruction manual made my first amp build easy. I liked the amp but always felt like it had a little something missing. I recently built a speaker cab with an 8 ohm 12 inch Eminence Legend, and I ran the amp (after changing output transformer taps) into that. Now it's absolutely fantastic. The amp has a very bluesy, vintage sound to it, and it handles pedals well. Overall a good amp that was easy to build."

Easy to build, good instructions and best 5W amp

"Instructions were very thorough and well explained. Using the instructions I was able to wire everything without issue. On my first power up, the amplifier worked. The cabinet is top quality and American made, I don't even get cabinets this good from Fender or Marshall. Everything in this kit is American made. The amplifier itself has a full rich sound, probably my favorite combo amp to date. Far better than my stock Blues Jr with the Jensen speaker and far outdone compared to a 5 Watt Marshall Class amplifier. 10/10 would recommend, hard to find a better tube practice amp."

Awesome little amp.

"Awesome little amp. This is the 3rd Mojotone amp kit I built. Previous kits were the Fender deluxe reverb, Marshall 18 watt TMB. Leave it to me, I went from some of the more difficult to one of the easiest builds. This was lot of fun and a good beginners built with a great sound. If your thinking of trying a build this is a good 1st choice."

Little big punch

"Easy to build. Excellent quality in the materials and sounding perfectly on stage next to the drums. Impressive sound pressure generated by the dynamics of the 6V6. Perfect compression with the tone of the time. A 10!!"

a fantastic little beast

"I have built plenty of hand wired amps but this was my first point-to-point amp and it is a fantastic little beast. The amp is free of hum and has great cleans when volume set before noon. I originally built it to spec but wanted more headroom so I added more negative feedback and lowered the cathode and plate resistors somewhere between a Champ and a GA-5. Love it through my Tele and a 2x10 cabinet with some reverb. I hope Mojotone offers some more p2p amp kits so much fun to build and sound fantastic."

OMG! This experience is so good.

"OMG! This experience is so good. I have only built one other amp, a 5F1 kit with a PCB, so definitely a beginner. While it was fun, I really couldn’t understand the interaction between the components, so I found myself just following directions and hoping for a good outcome. Enter the GA5 point-to-point kit. Holy crap! I can follow the schematics, understand how everything interacts, and even consider future mods (with a little research)... a totally immersive experience if you want to approach it that way. I feel I’m really getting a good understanding of amp building as opposed to just executing a plan. A really cool addition to the manual would be a discussion of some of the more common mods, and the impact of replacing certain components with others. Excellent kit Mojotone!"

One Broken Part, Otherwise Great

"Indicator lamp base was faulty, not pressed right and was unusable. Rather than wait, I built the kit without the indicator light. Overall, Mojotone does very well though and I have built a bunch of their kits."

a very fun build and a great way to spend an afternoon or a couple evenings.

"This took about 4 legitimate hours to build (the rest of the time was spent fixing my own mistakes when I miswired something), and works great. It sounds a lot larger and much less boxy than I was expecting, and is surprisingly loud, with very little noise. My kit came with a Celestion Eight 15. It does have an 8 ohm tap available if you'd like to try different speakers. Would love to see this in a Head-only version with a matching 12" speaker box available. Cabinet is well constructed, chassis was cut and labeled well, and I would definitely recommend. The one very-minor difficulty was that the tilted face makes it a little tight to wire the inputs and volume knob (which is still easier than wiring up the pre-amp socket - I need a smaller tip on my soldering iron). Overall, a very fun build and a great way to spend an afternoon or a couple evenings."
