Terrific amp very classic fender chimey sound thang going on here just picked one up for £650 and really happy with it but it definitely needs to be played at gigging volume …..if you want a boudoir amp buy a champ! The stock speaker (Jensen)was a bit shrill on the highs so I swapped it out for a Weber ..good call this is now a different amp night and day
I have one and gig with it. This amp really got a bad rap — it’s not a living room amp. It needs to be played at live-gig volumes so the power tubes can do their job. It doesn’t sound good until it’s really pushed; you need the room size and air volume for this amp to truly come into its own. It actually sounds awful in my living room — a definite Jekyll & Hyde thing going on. The clean channel sounds great — nice and chimey, a classic Fender tone. The overdrive channel is solid for a Fender amp; I re-tubed the gain stage with a 5751, which really gave the channel more clarity and definition. Like all tube amps, you can fine-tune the tone dramatically with a re-tube. Fender isn’t a tube manufacturer — they source their tubes from the same marketplace as everyone else. On the downside, it’s heavy, and I hate lugging it around. Tube changes are also difficult due to the chassis layout and the fact that the sockets are attached directly to the circuit board under the deck. At ¼ power, the tremolo circuit is underpowered and barely noticeable. All in all, though, this is a great gigging amp.
Love Mine – great for home and Studio – I add a JBL D130 (original) in an early Bandmaster sized 2-12″ enclosure 10X20X30 closed back with a cross over to a hi-freq driver installed in it and the combo does superb with my Pedal Steel, Lap Steels and Guitars. Would consider owning a backup.
