Tweed Super® 5F4 Style Guitar Tube Amp Kit

Mojotone’s Tweed Super Style Amp Kit is based on the ~20-30 watt model rumored to be one of Leo Fender’s favorite creations. The Tweed Super’s design gave it a more nasal sound than some of its larger relatives, which makes it popular among guitarists who play gritty blues and rockabilly. This 5F4 circuit has a unique break up that has been featured in recordings by the likes of Joe Bonamassa and The Eagles.

The amp utilizes two 6L6gc power tubes for to push 28 watts before clipping, all the while delivering fat luscious low tones with pristine highs. We paired the Super circuit with two Mojotone Anthem AN10C 10 35 Watt speakers that are lively with a fat, snappy response and offer a cool gritty overdriven sound that will not sacrifice articulation for distortion. For those players seeking a responsive amp that is perfect for roots rock styles and is easy to haul around, the Mojotone Tweed Super Style kit is a no brainer.

Global controls include presence, bass, and treble for a multitude of sonic variations. There are two channels, bright and normal, and each has two inputs. The normal channel is more tame with a slightly warmer overall sound, while the bright channel has more aggressive highs and breaks up slightly faster. These inputs can not only be used in a traditional fashion but can also be ‘jumpered’ together and blended, via their dedicated volume controls, for even more sound options.

Please note that there is no step-by-step assembly manual available for this amp kit. This amp kit comes only with a technical schematic and a wiring diagram. This is an advanced kit best suited for builders with previous amp building experience and understanding of electrical circuits.

When purchasing a kit from Mojotone, you will receive the following documentation.

1. Schematic

2. Wiring Diagram / Layout

If you purchase a kit from Mojotone and do not receive these documents, you can obtain copies by emailing tech@mojotone.com or calling 800-927-6656. The Mojotone staff is available Monday through Friday from 8:30 a.m. to 5:00 p.m. EST unless otherwise closed.

Mojotone kits include the best quality parts that are available at the time of purchase. If a substitution is required, our team will use parts that are of equal quality to ensure the integrity of the kit build remains the same.

Building a fully functional amplifier kit is not an easy task. Before building a kit, one should have the ability to properly solder as well as read and understand a schematic and wiring diagram. While we do our very best to ensure all documentation is current, the included documentation is meant to serve as an overall guide to building the amplifier. Simply following the schematic and wiring diagram does not guarantee you will have a fully functional amplifier. In fact, post build troubleshooting is a common issue across all builds.

Our staff is available to assist with basic troubleshooting needs. There are plenty of online videos available that are helpful with most post build issues. Technical staff is available via email by sending a message to tech@mojotone.com. You may also call our sales team to discuss build problems, dial 800-927-6656 and press 1 for sales.

Building a tube amplifier takes time, dedication, resources and most importantly... Skills! The experience of building an amp can come with some frustration, the reward of completing the build is definitely well worth your time. Please review the wiring diagram, schematic and manual (if applicable) prior to making your purchase. Mojotone will not accept any returns on amplifier kits and/or parts that have been assembled, soldered or modified.

Well worth it!

"Andy Johnson has great patience! I built the amp in one day and made a terrible mistake. I soldered the ext jack backwards! Andy did a great job trying to help. I didn't see the mistake until I took everything apart. But once I got it, I love it! So many tonal options! I highly recommend these guys and their products!"

Happy Customer

"I assembled this kit over a few weekends and found it enjoyable and rewarding. The wiring diagram is clear and easy enough to follow. A few small snags worth mentioning, though. The spec called for 2× 270k resistors, but 27k resistors were provided in the kit. And the fiberboard had to be trimmed in a few places to accommodate the transformer lugs. Despite these minor inconveniences, however, I still give a five star rating...the component quality is excellent, and this thing sounds fantastic thru my 2x12 cab. Nice work Mojo!"

P.S.

"PS, A few things I forgot to mention in my previous review 1) The kit is very well organized. 2) The transformers and other components are high quality. 3) The Mojotone tweed cabinet is actually better than my authentic Fender '57 tweed Twin Amp reissue cabinet, i.e. the Fender amp's fingerjoints are fairly visible underneath the tweed. 4) The amp is fairly lightweight and is easy to carry to a gig or a jam session."

it sounds fantastic

"I put together the Tweed Super 5F4 Style Combo kit and it sounds fantastic. The warm tones will get plenty of use in my home studio. Its everything I hoped it would be. Every component they provided was top notch. The parts-compartmented trays are a brilliant idea, and the sticker on the underside of the lid describing what is in each compartment makes keeping track of components straightforward. I had a couple of minor issues and my email questions were answered soon enough. I just ordered another kit. Thanks Mojotone!"

Well done, MojoTone.

"I just finished building my first MojoTone amp, a Super 5F4. I substituted the Jensen C10Q's with Celestion G10 Gold's, but apart from this, completely stock. One of the JJ 6L6's was DOA, but MojoTone was very quick to send a replacement. What a beautiful amp, and kit. All of the components, and the tweed-covered cab, are absolutely top quality. The finished product looks like something I might have bought from a boutique builder. The amp itself is absolutely dead silent, no hum or hiss. And it sounds absolutely amazing. I was extremely pleased with my purchase and the speed and quality of the packing and shipping. Well done, MojoTone. You have my vote and a new loyal customer."

a great sounding kit for the money

"Mojo tweed super amp is a great sounding kit for the money. The build was easy with the schematic and layout diagrams. I have built 4 or 5 of these kits now, some stock and some fully modified and upgraded. I would recomend this kit to anyone who likes to build and wants a smaller amp with a big vintage sound.Stock kit sounds good as is, upgrades make this kit sound killer."

Novice looking for help!

"I don't have a review but more a question. When I was 14 I built a solid state single 12 Heathkit guitar amplifier along with a Heathkit fuzzbox and had the time of my life. Everything worked fine with the exception of the Reverb which I never got sorted out. My question is with my limited experience, I'm in my sixties now and remember I built that amplifier and fuzzbox when it was 14. Is this something that I'm going to be getting in over my head with? I'm really fascinated by the whole process of building an amplifier and I really want to do this but I want to be successful obviously. Any suggestions?"

Sounds very nice!

"Cabinet showed up yesterday ( it looks awesome with the laquer ) loaded the speakers and chassis and finished tests. All good, pugged in and fired up. Sounds very nice! Looking forward to getting the speakers broken in and getting it dialed in."

Great kit, building it was easy and enjoyable.

"Great kit, building it was easy and enjoyable. 40 watts RMS: With one simple mod and the addition of a larger filter capacitor & JJ 6L6GC tubes my super "Super" amp puts out 40 watts RMS, as tested with a signal generator and an oscilloscope. The mod: Connect the red wire (centertap) of the output transformer to the load side of the standby switch. Also, replace the 16uf cap on the load side of the standby switch with a 47uf/500v cap. This mod makes the choke feed all of the DC circuits EXCEPT for the 6L6 plate circuits. (That is the way the blackface Fender amps are wired.) I installed a 50 watt output transformer to make sure that addition power gets to the speakers."

I think I've got an amp to last me a lifetime.

"This is the 3rd or 4th 5F4 I've put together. They all had Mojotone cabinets, but this is the first "kit" I've put together from Mojotone parts. All in all, a great kit, and a great amp. I added a few items such as star washers for the jacks, and a copper grounding plate (Hobby Lobby!). I did have a few really small issues (wrong tubes, damaged transformer) which Mojotone handled super fast and effortlessly. The kit included adequate lengths of wire to get it all connected up. The instructions are... for the experienced builder, unfortunately. Not a beginners kit - unless - they're also studying some assembly tricks online or in a good "amp book". I did like the way Mojotone compartmentalized all the resistors and capacitors, instead of just putting it all in a bag. VERY NICE TOUCH! Just look at the label, check the code on the part, and install. No rummaging around like doin' a jigsaw puzzle! I also added my own little secret circuit change, that does not change the great tones from the preamp, but does up the gain into the cathodyne phase inverter. Result is higher output for stage use. Output measures 13.125 volts into 4 ohms... (math) about 43 watts. Mojotone covered my cabinet in black tolex, at my request. I ditched their excellent hardware and substituted all stainless steel fasteners, and implemented T-nuts on the baffle. Beauty "finishing washers" added as well. I think I've got an amp to last me a lifetime."
