Very good experience, as this
"Very good experience, as this was my first build. Sounds excellent."
Ever heard of a guitarist named Randy Rhoads? Or how about the Young brothers from a little band called AC/DC? They are just some of the artists that come to mind who used the late 70's JMP 2204.
In the mid-seventies, rock artists wanted a bit more gain and a lot more power from their stage amplifiers. In response, Jim Marshall and crew developed the master volume function, added it to their plexi platform, and released the new circuit as the JMP 2203 and 2204 models. With this new feature, the artist could crank the amplitude of the preamp output as they would with earlier, non-master models, to get an exciting distorted breakup of the signal. Then, they could adjust the overall output level to the speakers using the master volume control so that it sat nicely in the mix with the rest of the band. From there, we experienced a total overhaul of the rock and roll sound. Bands got heavier, and the solo leads soared higher than ever.
We are happy to add the 50 Watt version (2204) to our British series kit lineup. We had the opportunity to study an example from 1979 to create the near-replica chassis and head shell. For transformers and choke, we offer the same tried and true units from our British 50W 800 kit. The big difference between our kit and the original is the use of an old-school turret board instead of the printed circuit board that Marshall had employed. We think this will offer more fun and future serviceability to the build.
As with all of our amplifier kits, we supply you with the best electronic components available. You will see Mojo Dijon polypropylene capacitors, Mojotone high-voltage can style filtering capacitors, carbon film resistors, Belton brand tube sockets, Alpha potentiometers, 20 gauge topcoat PVC wire, and more.
As a bonus, we supply everything needed to build either the 1976-1978 2204 which is more of a hybrid between the earlier plexi and later JCM800 circuits, or the 1978-1980 2204 which features a bit more gain akin to the JCM 800 era. Which one you build is up to you and your tastes.

Building a fully functional amplifier kit is not an easy task. Before building a kit, one should have the ability to properly solder as well as read and understand a schematic and wiring diagram. While we do our very best to ensure all documentation is current, the included documentation is meant to serve as an overall guide to building the amplifier. Simply following the schematic and wiring diagram does not guarantee you will have a fully functional amplifier. In fact, post build troubleshooting is a common issue across all builds.
Our staff is available to assist with basic troubleshooting needs. There are plenty of online videos available that are helpful with most post build issues. Technical staff is available via email by sending a message to tech@mojotone.com. You may also call our sales team to discuss build problems, dial 800-927-6656 and press 1 for sales.
Building a tube amplifier takes time, dedication, resources and most importantly... Skills! The experience of building an amp can come with some frustration, the reward of completing the build is definitely well worth your time. "All the other reviews are spot on with this high quality kit! I built the 1978 version and it absolutely rocks at ANY volume level. The amp was biased cool and the clean tones are amazing. It’s pumped into a (2) 12 cabinet loaded with 50 watt Weber Silver Bells. Big low end thump, and crystal clear highs, and it’s a crunch monster cranked. The sound I’ve always dreamed from my Les Paul. Kudos Mojotone!"

"I play in a band in college and the 50 watt 2204 is suprisingly perfect for my gigs. Practicality aside, it is the best sounding amp ever if built well. Just don’t build the 1976 circuit because it sounds like straight garbage. The 1978 circuit with a less aggressive bright cap like a 100pf cap is extremely versatile. The amp with a 3 way bright cap switch for no cap, a small cap, and a larger value cap is probably the best rock amp in the entire world. Just build the 1978 2204 and don’t use the provided 1000pf bright cap. Either use a 4700pf one or a small 100pf one."

"This amp was fun to build and sounds great. This was my first amp build, but I have experience building many mic pres, compressors and fixing various amps. I also have a healthy fear/respect of electricity, which helps when dealing with such high voltage. I learned a lot and now have a great 2204 JMP in the tone arsenal."

"If you're looking to build JMP 2204 clone, this is the ticket! What a great amp kit. Parts are all top notch and will allow you to build a killer 50 watt amp. Particularly impressive are the transformers.. that's a lot of iron! You should have a bit of build experience before taking this one on. Not having learned a few things along the way would have made this a more difficult build. Done correctly, you will be rewarded with awesome tone! I would also recommend considering using a variac or a Brown Box and dialing down the AC input. 109 VAC input, produced plate voltages of 384 volts allowing the grid current to run a little higher. Really sweetens up the amp to my ears. If you're looking for Rock N Roll tone, this is the one!"

"I normally don’t write reviews, but I had to on this amp kit. Every single part is high quality, the wiring diagram and schematic are easy to follow, just double and triple check all your work. This was my first amp build, and I’m beyond pleased with how it turned out. If you have any hesitation, I wouldn’t. Just order this kit, you won’t regret it!!!"

"Great kit, high quality components, layout diagrams make the build process way too easy. I built mine as a 68’ spec 1987 4 hole and it turned out great. Just had to had to buy a separate faceplate and attach the 68k grid resistors to the input jacks. My only suggestion is that mojotone would add the option to order this as a 1987 kit instead of only a 2204 and maybe replace the EH 12ax7’s with some JJ’s or Chinese if possible. Thanks for the great kit, I’ll be buying a 100 watt 1959 in the near future!"

"If you like the Plexi bite with a little more preamp gain, this is your amp. It is not a bedroom level amp. It needs to get loud to sound right but it will shower you with an amazing cascade of rock n roll goodness. The notes are articulate and defined. Straight in the high input, those great 70's rock guitar jumps out. Boosted and it gives you the 80's! When I say great I mean Billy Squier, Mick Jones, the Young Bros, Frehley, Mick Ralphs, Schenker, Jabs, Edward, Downing, Tipton. That is what this amp does. I have only upped the cold clipper resistors about 50% on the V1a and b and used a slightly smaller cap on the V1a to curb some bass. JJ's pre and power tubes and hit it with a Guv'nor clone I built. It is very quiet and is a tonal bliss."

"Had a blast! Challenging enough to search tube technology, advisable. Need a stand to hold this chassis - MojoTone sells one and it is good - I built mine from 2ea. 2x12". You will need is a bias current set up - MojoTone has a kit. A DC volt meter (1000vdc) attached to pin 3 of the power tube and a milliamp meter attached to the tube base kit. Current calculator will give the 75% current in milliamps. Schematic diagram shows bias current adjust potentiometer as a voltage divider the wiring diagram shows it as a variable resistor in series which is correct. All of the jumper wires on the back side of the board. Study diagrams and schematics closely to get familiar with where everything goes. Always turn the power on with the standby off, potentiometers to "0", warm the tubes, then stand by ON. Fred and the boys are the best, right there to help me. Fred suggested to inventory all parts. Tremendous support with a tremendous Amplifier. Thank you MojoTone."

"I'll be damned. I own many vintage Marshalls and this was my first amp build. I had some questions about wiring the power transformer, but they were promptly answered by Kenny P. This thing sounds great. I'm gonna order more of these kits, because I see value in touring with point to point amps. Me, or my tech can fix stuff quickly and easily on the fly and I'm not afraid to throw these in a truck and go. Taking original JMP's out, is nerve wracking. Only thing I would change is the ohm selector switch. The switch sticks out past the "box" which means its gonna get sheared off, on night one. Bedroom players might no see an issue with this, but for me, it's huge. I'm changing that part. But, this amp kit is amazing. I also need the ability to switch to 220V, but thats me. Either way, it sounds better than expected. Aloha from Hawaii. PS: the two EL 43 tubes were rediculously mismatched and where marked 29 (whatever that means) but I had some JJ's that worked. Minor detail. Buy this kit"
