The Fender ’68 Custom Deluxe does have a tube rectifier — it’s a 5AR4 located in the V9 position. What I believe may have changed to accommodate the reverb and tremolo on both channels is the tube layout. I recently swapped the V2 tube (which used to be the first gain stage for the tremolo channel) from a 12AX7 to an ECC81 (reducing gain from 100% to about 60%). In addition to taming the tremolo channel as intended, it also lowered the output of the custom channel to almost no sound. This makes me suspect that the layout is not the same as the ’65 Deluxe Reverb Reissue. You may email me at rwyjunior@comcast.net and let me know what you find out. If I learn anything else, I’ll let you know.
