I have a 1998 65 Deluxe Reverb reissue. I put a 5751 (G=70) in and it is magic. It tamed the verb. It no longer goes from hero to zero between 2.5 and 2.6 on the verb knob. Also have a JAN NOS RCA Black plate in verb chan with the twisted filament and double mica, a Celestion G12H 30W (55Hz). Its much better than the 68CDR’s Celestion 12-70W, and the “Fritz” (brings both chans thru verb/trem and extra half stage pream, mod Clean channel Marshal tone stack, and 50% reduced negative feedback. Next I’m ordering a Fromel “Supreme” Cap kit. That’ll be it I’m pretty sure.
so….what did you do? I also wanted to tame the tremelo channel a bit with a 12au7 and asumed V2 was it , like the ’65 DRRI
What I think may have changed to accommodate the reverb and tremolo on both channels is the tube layout. I recently swapped the V2 tube (which used to be the first gain stage for the tremolo channel) from a 12AX7 to an ECC81, reducing the gain from 100% to about 60%. In addition to taming the tremolo channel as intended, it also lowered the output of the custom channel to almost no sound. I suspect the layout is not the same as the ’65 Deluxe Reverb Reissue. You may email me at rwyjunior@comcast.net and let me know what you find out. If I learn anything else, I’ll let you know.
